For people joining the motor industry and those who want a job within the automotive sector, it is paramount that you get the interview just right.
There are four main stages to interviews:
- The interview
- Ending the interview
- After the interview
- Ensure you know about the company – do your homework.
- Find out what type of interview style is used and who will be interviewing you.
- Prepare your questions for the interview.
- Collate any documents you wish to take with you.
- Check the details of the interview – time, date etc.
- Do a practice journey to the interview venue.
- Dress suitably for the role – be smart, first impressions are important!
- Think positively, believe in yourself and relax.
The interview starts as soon as you enter the building, so be polite and courteous to all employees.
- Arrive approximately 10 minutes early.
- On greeting, make eye contact, and have a firm handshake.
- Mirror the interviewers tone, some can be formal, others more relaxed. Establish a rapport with the interviewer, make them feel comfortable with you.
- Sit when asked. Sit up straight.
- Body language – sit with legs uncrossed and arms on your lap or by your side.
- Make eye contact but don’t overdo it and stare.
- Don’t accept any food or drink if offered, you could end up choking or spilling your drink.
- Smile at appropriate times.
- Listen carefully and don’t interrupt.
- Admit if you can’t answer a question – be honest.
- Avoid discussing salary.
- Show interest and enthusiasm.
- Remain positive and find opportunities to sell yourself.
- Any questions? If they ask this, have your prepared questions either in your head or to hand. Make sure they’re relevant. It could be an opportunity to show that you have done your homework.
Ending the interview
This is your opportunity to leave the interviewer with a positive and favourable impression.
- Let them know how keen and enthusiastic you are about the position.
- Find out what the next stage is.
- Thank the interviewer for their time, smile and give a firm hand shake.
After the interview
- Call your consultant and feedback how the interview went, expressing whether or not you’re still interested. Your consultant will contact the employer to get their feedback and respond to you if relevant.
